The lower 60%

Q. What would happen if every politician was required to live like the bottom 60% of their constituents?

A. They would redefine “bottom” and continue to screw us over.

Politics, activism, advocacy

Politics is about changing someone’s vote.
Advocacy is about changing someone’s mind.
Activism is about changing someone’s life.

Increased diversity of Oxford faculty

Today, Miami shared student work on how faculty diversity has increased over the past ten years. With new regulations making it difficult to recruit and keep international faculty, it will be interesting to see how the follow up to this project looks a year from now.

Fight advice for #LeonardoDavis

Dear Leo,
I will try my best to teach you to talk your way out of most problems, but at some point you will probably have to fight. These are some basic thoughts to consider.

1: is there no other option? A physical fight should always be the last option.
2: when it goes down, who are the witnesses and what will they see first? Security cameras, family and close friends should be near by.
3: if you can take it, let them have the first punch. If you take it and just walk away, sometimes that is better than throwing back, but if you do throw back, don’t wait at all.
4: always expect what you get back to be twice as hard as what you dish out. Fist fights turn to knives, to guns. Man to man turns to getting jumped by five dudes you did not know were with the opponent.
5: the most important. Is it worth it both for you and whoever you are fighting for? If it will not change things, if it could potentially make things worse, if the results you are fighting for are not guaranteed, don’t.

Politician and their promises

Today’s politicians are asking you to marry them. They promise they will bathe regularly, once you consummate the marriage, without evidence they have ever taken a bath in their lives. – Ancilleno O. Davis April, 20th 2017

Another epic dream 4/16/2017

So,
I fell asleep with Leo for an afternoon nap after eating a bowl of oatmeal with cranberries and almonds… then this.

I walked down the hall of the old RND cinemas, the smell of popcorn was strong. As I turned between the concession stand and the wall of the theater, the excitement built as I got ready to see my first movie in the theater with #LeonardoDavis.
The new theatre layout made a pentagon shape with a wrap around walkway and stairs on each corner that lead up to projection and down to the office.
The movie was entertaining but I was distracted by showing Leo how my feet make the sticky noise theater floors allow.
Then all hell broke loose, because Tom Cruise busted in. Not because he was famous, but because everyone knew he wanted to kill me. I tucked Leo under my arm football style and took off for the exit. Shuffling around the people who began to shrink. I got into the hall and dashed down the first flight of stairs.
I got to the bottom floor and slipped into a secret board room, where my cousin inga was describing the benefits of the secret rooms with a friend and her daughter Halley was there but like two feet tall.
I closed the door quietly and told them to pretend I was not there. Tom Cruise then came to the wall outside the secret room all “here’s Johnny” style crazy. I lay behind the couch waiting, holding my breath. Then he busted in and I jumped out the window with Leo in my arms. We took off running down Bay Street, dodging cars and trucks. Apparently, I am faster than Tom Cruise. Finally, I run into a parking lot, still screaming for help and I saw a man about to pull out begging him to help us, because Tom Cruise is trying to kill us.
This guy starts point with his umbrella and his tight sweater vest at some building while making up some bs excuse. Luckily, Nikki’s friend Sharon is in the next car.
She jumps out and says to Sweatervest ” we have to help him. You know Tom Cruise crazy.” Then we jump in the passenger side of her white Scion tC. I lean the chair all the way back, and turn on the cellphone to show her why Tom Cruise was trying to kill us.

A Facebook video of Tom Cruse in a frog suit singing and dancing.

And that kiddies is why you should be careful what you share on Facebook.

International Scholar Qualifications

To all my qualified International Scholars. One day, you will read the perfect job posting. Every thing you have done is listed as a requirement. Your life’s goals are explicitly stated as the target measures for the position.

When that day comes, I hope the bottom of the posting does not say, "The University will not sponsor immigrant visas for this position."

It’s like calling your pet to run toward you from the other side of a glass door.

Honesty to unburden my soul

For those of you that wonder why I help everyone I can, I sometimes seem to go out of my way. I sometimes seem to help others to my own detriment.

For at least six years now, I have thought every day that I should have assisted with giving CPR to a man that died on Jaws beach in the Bahamas during my birthday party. I went over to see if he needed help along with Gina, one of my best friends, but chose not to help, because… no great excuse, but lots of them.

A short while later my cousin drowned during a Defense Force Training incident. And while the two incidents could not have been connected other than through me, my cousin having been at the beach that day for my party, I feel responsible for both.

I feel every day I have to pay for what I did not do. This is why I encourage you to do your best. Why I try to help who I can, to exercise kindness whenever possible.
